RAMBLINGS OF A FLY TYER

Wing Waste Humpy

I’m writing this on the Sunday before Christmas, with all the running around and no time for fly tying, yeah, right, my wonderful wife does all that. I shop for her, then get back to my tying room and do what I do best (some goofing off, some tying). Anyway, this month we are going to delve into the “Humpy”. To most, it’s not the easiest pattern to tie properly and you’re right. I’m not going to give you a step by step tutelage, but am going to suggest the best book for help. “The Humpy Encyclopedia, More Than a Dozen Ways to Tie a Humpy” by Al & Gretchen Beatty is found on Amazon and is fairly inexpensive for a fly tying book.

I haven’t tied one in years and am very thankful for this book as I was asked to tie one for an auction plate. I picked the ‘wing waste humpy’. This book shows the easiest way I’ve ever seen.

Materials list for the ‘wing waste humpy’:

Hook: 1x long, dry fly, size 8 to 18

Thread: red (floss or 6/0 thread), the color is more important than if it’s floss or thread

Tail: Squirrel, moose body hair, elk hair – your choice

Body: thread or floss (I use thread)

Hump: waste from wing

Wing: elk body hair

Hackle: brown (I also like a combo of brown and grizzly)

#1) Directions are too much to write
#2) It’s copyright infringement to do so

That said you are more than welcome to come over and read my book or we can do some together. My fly tying room is always open… well, unless I’m out fishing
