Chinook and Steelhead try to go up Alameda Creek to spawn near Freemont,
California. This is a very urbanized area where the riparian zones have morphed
into concrete in some areas. The video is of Steelhead trying to swim up the
BART weir on Alameda Creek. We show this to make the point of what a fish
barrier is and the reality of what happens. The fish dont swim up and read
the sign fish barrier, and then turn around. Instead they throw themselves
against it again and again. This can decimate a fish population. We Rogue
Flyfishers need to work harder to correct our fish barriers and stop new ones
from being built. There is some good news. A fish ladder for the BART weir is
supposed to be built by 2010. Thank you to the Alameda Creek Alliance for
allowing us to use this video.
